I ask myself that question everyday.
Felt constant grief and especially GUILT that I wasn't fulfilling my purpose. I gained some peace through the revelation that I was living my purpose whether I was aware or not.

Just being alive means there's a reason for being. If you feel that there is a mission you came here to accomplish; then your purpose is in finding your "Dream Self". It's quite literally-- The person you dream of being. In that case, your purpose has to be RE-discovered or REmembered.

You were born knowing it and even as a child you knew it. It was just lost somewhere along the way. As usual, the best way to find something you've lost is to retrace your steps.

Walk through your memories.
What memories, however mundane and meaningless, seem to always enter your thoughts from time to time? Memories that seem to stand out and resurface more than others; even without a trigger. These would be memories that, when they would occur, you would ask yourself "Why do I always remember that?"
What daydreams, dreams, or fantasies do you remember from childhood? What things have you seen someone do and said to yourself "I wish I could do that"?
If you cannot recollect right away, then keep a notebook handy to jot them down as they come to you. Then just put the puzzle pieces together.

Your mission is most often "lost" because somewhere a long the way, you believed you were unworthy, uneducated, or incapable of accomplishing the feat. You weren't good enough. So instead of pursuing it, you locked it away.

Noone knows you better than you. I can promise you, with just a little "soul searching", you can discover what your own consciousness has been trying to tell you all along.

And this is important. Find a way to forgive yourself through this process. You're not a failure, you haven't squandered your gifts, and you have always been right where you are supposed to be.
