Maon means 'serpent, reptile' in the Finnish epic Kalevala. I'm translating an image of a sea-serpent, whose inscription says 'Great Maon'.
Would it not be possible that the people of Maon worshipped some form of snake? This was certainly common in northern Europe circa 5000 BC.
